Clusty - This is the old Vivisimo, only better now.  It offers clustered hits which is of great help for research.

Librarians' Internet Index - An index that offers over 20,000 entries, maintained by librarians and organized into 14 main topics and nearly 300 related topics.  The sites in the index are screened to be good for research, but as always when conducting research, you should always evaluate sites for:  currency, authority, objectivity, acuracy, and coverage.

Martindale's The Reference Desk - Provides an excellent index for just about any academic area and has a special index for medical information.

The Internet Public Library - Provides excellent research links for a variety of subject areas (roughly organized by Dewey Subjects), as well as a Ready Reference section, a Reading Room, and Special Collections.

Digital Librarian - A librarian's choice of the best on the web.  This site offers an index of subjects that offer great links.  It also showcases the best new available links on the web with descriptions of each.

Alltheweb Livesearch - This site is better than Google and actually begins searching while you are typing.

Universiteitsbibliotheek - A collection of special search engines.  Scroll down to find the area of research you are interested in, and the site provides you links and descriptions of the sites that are special to your area of research.  Art, Astrophsics, Biosciences, MP3 Players, etc.

Alta Vista - A great search engine that returns your hits in ranked order.

Webcrawler - A search engine.

Excite - A search engine.

Lycos - A search engine.

Yahoo - A search directory geared to 7-12 grade students.

Google - A great meta-search engine.

Dogpile - A metasearch engine.

Ask Jeeves - A search engine.
