New Teacher Info.

WELCOME TO THE DESERT SKY

LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER

Hello, my name is Judi Morris, and I am the library teacher.  It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Desert Sky Library for the new school year.  Please feel free to stop by and become better acquainted.  I look forward to working with you.

I send periodic updates through groupwise about what is going on in the library, what new materials we have acquired, web sites you may be interested in and other pertinent information

All students must attend a library orientation.  It is up to the LA teachers to arrange for their students' orientation.  Orientation must be completed before students may check out books or use the library.

Do you already know when you would like to bring classes in for book check out, reports and research projects?  Please feel free to email me or drop in and schedule the times you need.  In order to better serve you and the students, I would ask that you sign up at least 3 days before you want to bring a class.  Also, if you could leave a copy of the assignment for me, this will help me help your students more effectively.

Library Philosophy

The library at Desert Sky runs on an open library concept.  This means you may send individual students, or a small group (approximately 4 students with individual passes) to use the library, even when a scheduled class is in session.  You may schedule your classes for library time whenever you wish; you do not need a regularly scheduled time assigned for library use.  Please schedule directly with me.

The library is open for students each day from 7:55-3:10.  The library is closed for 1/2 hour a day for my lunch.  The library is closed at 1:20 on Wednesdays until further notice.  Students do not need passes before nor after school nor when they are with you; however, they do need a library pass at all other times.  Individual passes are required; group passes will not be accepted.  Please use a blue media center pass so I may more adequately serve and supervise your students.   Students who use the library frequently at lunch may be issued a blue monthly library pass by any teacher.

Library Services

Book check out is provided to individual students with passes as well as to classes who have scheduled a time.

I am happy to support research by individual students, classes and staff with instruction, pulled collections, provide internet web sites, etc.  The library has a web site that is accessed from the DSMS web site (http://www.dvusd.k12.az.us/dsms/index.html) or directly (http://jmorris.myteacher.dvusd.com/).  Internet links are already provided for a variety of subject areas.  However, if you would like URLs to be provided for an area not covered, or to support a special project, just let me know and I will locate good, available sites and set them up for access from the library web site

Collections can be provided for use in the library or in the classroom; however, books checked out to teachers may NOT go home with students

Reading lists and bibliographies are available upon request.  Please allow several days for me to complete requests

I will do my best to find answers to your reference questions and provide information searches for you.  Information searches are helpful in letting you know what is available in the library on a given subject.  Please allow several days to complete these searches.  For those of you who prefer to do your own searching, our school network allows you to search the library's collection database from your classroom through the InfoCentre program

A professional library is available in the SW room of the library.  Please feel free to browse at any time.  Your key opens the door.  Videos are stored in the professional library room.  Materials that have PRO as part of the call number are located in the professional library.  Items from the professional library must be checked out.   Use the checkout form on the clipboard in the professional library.  Write the date, your name, and the bar code number (not the call number).

A laminating machine is available.  We are glad to laminate for you if you wish.  Label the items with your name and room number and get them to me by Wednesday mornings.  Generally, you will receive the laminated items on Thursdays.  Please do not use the laminating machine if I am not here.

Support Materials in the Library

We are fortunate to have several computers available in the library for both student and staff use.  Students may use the library computers before and after school and during school with a pass.  You may send students during the day, with individual passes, to use the computers.  I encourage you to reserve them ahead of time for your students as they are very popular, and it is the norm that they are all in use.  Teachers who walk in do not have priority over students on these computers.  If you know you need to use the computers, reserve them ahead of time.

Camcorders, tripods, tape recorders, overhead projectors, vcrs, DVD players, laser disk players, headphones, & lcd projectors are available in the library for teacher checkout.  If you have problems with your av equipment, let me know.  Replacement batteries are available from the secretaries in the main office.

All software & hardware ordered by teachers must be catalogued in the library computer then checked out to the teacher

Overhead Projectors:  when installing a new bulb, remember if you touch the glass part with your fingers, it shortens the life of the bulb.  See me for replacement bulbs as needed

Three mobile laptop carts with internet connection are available for checkout through the library.  You may use it one week per quarter.   Please reserve it in advance.

Other

The library is a wonderful place for displays and I urge you to consider using it to share your students' work.  The bulletin board is also available.  See me to arrange display projects or to use the bulletin board.

Always observe the copyright law. Fair use does not mean fair abuse.  Remember it is always illegal to copy printed cartoons or to make them into transparencies.  Whenever you make powerpoint presentations be sure to include the following phrase on the title page if you use materials from other sources:  This presentation contains the fair use of copyrighted materials.

Here are some web newsletters that may be of interest to you

PBS Teacher Preview:  This lists all the shows that might be of interest to teachers and tells their date, time, grade level and small blurb about the show.  Often it lists web sites connected to the show topic

http://pbs.org/teachersource/previews/

Surfing the Net with Kids:  This comes out weekly and takes a different theme each week.  It lists kid-friendly web sites connected with that subject.  Recommends good sites

http://www.surfnetkids.com

World Wide Words:  This comes from Britain and is about words.  Each newsletter contains a new topical word, a weird word, and a question and answer section.  It gives the full meaning and history of the word.  Very interesting

Well, that's enough for now.  I look forward to being of service to you and your students.  My two-digit phone extension is 13.
