connecting Dell laptop to TV

PC Tip - Connecting a Dell Laptop to a TV Monitor

Many computer users in the district are used to displaying the image from their computer on a monitor in their classroom. Recently, users of the new Dell laptops have asked if it is possible to display the image from these laptops on a Monitor in their classroom.

It is not only possible, but also simple provided you have the following items:

  • A Dell Latitude laptop
  • An s-video cable
  • A monitor or VCR that accepts s-video input

If your Monitor or VCR does not accept s-video input but has composite (RCA) inputs instead, you may need a composite TV-out adapter cable. If you need a composite TV-out adapter cable, go to the Current Technology for Computer Systems page on DVNet for information on ordering the adaptor.

Making the Connection

  1. Shut down the television and computer or put the computer to sleep.
  2. Plug one end of the s-video cable in to the s-video connector on the computer.

(The s-video port is the round port with the icon of a television and arrow).

  1. Plug the other end of the s-video cable into your television (or VCR).
  2. Turn on the television and laptop (or awaken the laptop).

Configure the Display

With your laptop connected to your television, you may choose show the display on only the laptop or television, or on both the laptop and television.

To change your display options (displaying the same image on the television and laptop), press the menu key at the top of your keyboard, or click on the desktop using the right button below the trackpad.

In the drop-down menu, select Graphics Options > Output To > Intel (R) Dual Display Clone > Monitor + Notebook (or Monitor + Television)...

Your computer display should now be mirrored on your television monitor.
